Jane Goodall Institute Tanzania (Tanzania)

Mary Egid Mavanza is the Program Director of Gombe Masito Ugalla (GMU) Ecosystem Program of the Jane Goodall Institute Tanzania (JGI Tanzania).  Ms. Mavanza has worked with JGI Tanzania for more than 15 years, implementing various projects in Western Tanzania where the Institute's conservation efforts are focused. The core objective running through all JGI programs in this area is to conserve western Tanzania's ecosystem and natural resources through a community centered approach.  Under the GMU program, Ms. Mavanza leads a team of 10 technical staff that work with local government authorities to conserve remaining endangered indigenous forests.  These forests host over 90% of the remaining chimpanzees in Tanzania.

Mary was born and primarily educated in Tanzania.  She obtained her  Bachelor's Degree in Home Economics and Human Nutrition in 1996 from Sokoine University (Tanzania) and her Masters degree in Development Policy and Process from Reading University (UK) in 2005.
