Liane Schalatek

Associate Director

Washington Office of the Heinrich Böll Stiftung (Germany)


Liane Schalatek is the Associate Director of the Washington Office of the Heinrich Böll Stiftung, a German non-profit political foundation affiliated with the German Green Party, where she leads the work on climate finance for the Foundation’s 30 offices worldwide. She is also a leading expert on gender and climate finance. She is currently working to ensure that the new Green Climate Fund (GCF) is operationalized in a gender-sensitive way and has been involved in the GCF design process from its beginning in 2011.

She co-founded and co-leads one of the primary civil society climate finance transparency efforts, the website www.climatefundsupdate.org, a joint project with ODI.  She has been engaged as a civil society observer in UNFCCC climate negotiations since COP 14.  A journalist by training, she has published widely on these issues. She holds two master degrees in International Affairs as well as in Political Science and Political Economy.

“To help realize women’s contribution to a less polluted world, and address their suffering from climate change impacts, climate financing instruments need to change significantly.  They need to transform from being largely gender-blind to gender-responsive by changing the way they measure results, determine funding priorities and engage women as key stake holders.”
