Dear Community,
We watched with heavy hearts the deeply disappointing results of the 2024 U.S. election. Trump’s previous term in office already left a deep wound on the country, and a second term significantly escalates threats to our democracy, communities, and Mother Earth.
In these extremely difficult and uncertain times, we are reminded of the resilience we hold within, and the power we have when united together. History has shown that in moments of crisis, frontline communities and women in all their diversity have stepped forward as leaders, guiding communities with strength, compassion, and resilience. Today, we are called to do the same.
Today, we can remember that we carry a fire within us, fueled by a love so fierce that it endures even during times of impossible tragedy. It may take time to build our way forward, but we can collect our power together so that fear and division do not hold us back, and where we refuse to bend or break. We can choose to keep building a world where all can walk freely and safely, where the Earth’s waters, forests, and climate are protected, and where we live in a world balanced within the web of life.
We have been in a great struggle that has become even more visible, one where we will have to dig deep into ourselves to pull through— but like the river carving stone, we can learn to be a force that has ongoing endurance if we work collectively and in solidarity. This is how we have been organizing and we will continue to do so.
Please rest as you need, grieve and rage as you need. We will continue to rise with resilience in our bones. Our collective networks are guardians of hope, architects of justice, and makers of joy in the hardest of times. The journey to dismantle and transform systemic patriarchy, racism, colonization, and capitalism is one requiring significant endurance and dedication. In this struggle, we can lift a beacon of light for each other to remember and generate an ancestral future connected to the land and to our inherent grace, dignity, and destiny that is shared deeply: to live in balance, as part of a world where kindness, reciprocity, and well-being thrive.
As we prepare for COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan, and the next four years, we remain clear-eyed about the weight of the U.S.’s role as a leading historical emitter and major oil and gas producer. While it is very possible that the U.S. will withdraw from the Paris Agreement under the Trump administration, we are committed to showing up, alongside our global partners, to hold the U.S. accountable and to advocate for bold and transformative policies that prioritize climate justice and human rights.
This is a critical time for the global community to renew its commitment to climate justice. We know that the political context of the United States is dire, and we will need to support each other more than ever before. Yet, we hold on to the belief and truth that our communities locally and globally are powerful and strategic and caring, and that we will and can continue to fight for liberation, and for the actualization of a world guided by justice and freedom. We will not give up on this planet or each other. Please know you are not alone— we are resilient and standing in our collective love and power together.
For the Earth and All Generations,
Our WECAN team sends our love and care to you all
