Power to the People, 100% Renewable Energy for All!
It is a fact that non-renewable energies will, by definition, run out. It is also a fact that in the meantime, dependence on these energy sources is causing multiple global crises. If we are to preserve modernity and planetary habitability, we must soon shift to 100% renewable energy in all sectors. Despite this basic logic, most of humanity so far has taken measures nowhere near proportional to the problem.
One fundamental necessity to breaking the inertia is a robust, global call for a 100% renewable energy target. After all, if a critical mass of people does not set the required goal, we are far less likely to achieve it.
The Renewable Energy Policy Institute with key partners has established itself as a leader of this critical call for action. The mission of the Renewables 100 Policy Institute is to focus on creating the foundation for the successful transition to a 100% renewable energy future. Of critical importance are the areas of policy making, technical solutions demonstrated by real life project applications, grassroots education and strategic partnerships with other NGOs and organizations, and effective stakeholder outreach on all levels.
Reasons for working in this topic, project or business:
I am passionate about the energy that powers our lives. I believe that the time for a universal goal of 100% renewable energy has come. We have the technological solutions and we can certainly invest in innovation to bring us to the desired outcome in an expedited fashion.
WIth 100% Renewable energy the winners are the all the people! I am particularly excited about the opportunity for renewables to empower women and communities in the most remote areas of the world, thus allowing for greater environmental anfd gender justice as well as helping the most vulnerable segment of our population.
In addition Renewable energy brings additional benefits such as economic development, water preservation, access to food, health benefits, air quality improvement, grid resilience and flexibility, a more distributed, cleaner and resilient energy infrastructure.
Root causes of the problems in this field and main barriers:
The fossil status quo can be a challenge, however, technological breakthroughs as well as cost reductions for renewable energy technologies have allowed the market to form and thrive.
We need policy structures that are consistent, transpaent and long term to allow us to reach the 100% renewable energy goal worldwide.
What is needed to overcome barriers to implement solutions:
We need as comprehensive Policy Structure that levels the playing field for renewable energies. Our fossil reliance is heavily subsidised and the incentives for renewables pale by comparison. In order for the whole world to be powered (2 Billion people currently have no access to energy) we all collectivelly need to shift to a cleaner energy supply. Renewables are the fastest, cleanest and most sustainable way to power a growing world
Suggested best local solution for this topic:
Many cities, communities and countries already have 100% renewable energy targets, some of them have already reached those targets and are achieving more than 100% of locally generated renewable energy for details, please see www.renewables100.org and related links.
The Renewables 100 Policy Institute is hosting the first Pathways to 100% Renewable Energy Conference in San Francisco on April 16, 2013 www.renewables100.org. Leading thinkers on the topic will be presentig ideas and discussing solutions. We will have an ongoing campaign for the implementation of the necessary elements to enable all regions, cities and communities to create and achieve a 100% renewable energy future.
