Calls for Action and a Just Transition from Women Leading Divestment and Resistance to Fossil Fuels and Deforestation

SHARM EL-SHEIKH, Egypt (November 10, 2022) – On Thursday, November 10, women leaders will share vital reports and strategies for ending the era of fossil fuels and supporting communities and ecosystems impacted by extractive industries, deforestation, and Indigenous rights violations during a press conference organized by the Women’s Earth and Climate Action Network (WECAN) International at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) 27th session of the Conference of Parties (COP27) in Egypt.

Women leaders are building critical strategies for national and international divestment that call for justice and accountability from the financial sector and governments to phase out fossil fuels and deforestation, while advocating for a Just Transition that places people and planet first. Topics discussed will include the Fossil Fuel Non Proliferation Treaty, protection of the Amazon rainforest, impacts of fossil fuel projects on women and communities, and Indigenous sovereignty as a solution to environmental degradation.
