City/Country: Oliva, Valencia -Spain-
The Natural Park 'Marjal Pego-Oliva' is home to many different animal and plant species and it's also an ideal spot for migrating birds to stop by. But not only that, this park is also the place where ground water is born and stores itself, providing thousands of people with clean groundwater. However, due to the effects of climate change, this might be about to change. The 'Marjal Pego-Oliva' is connected to the sea via a little river. Because of the drought that we have been suffering for a while now, we may be about to face a major problem: marine intrusion. The sea is now likely to start getting into the river and get to the Natural Park, if that happens, the park will suffer from salinization. This would be an irreversible ecological disaster, as most of its flora and fauna would disappear and we would no longer be able to use groundwater.
