Women of Bangladesh
Organization: ActionAid Bangladesh
The women in the photos live in coastal south of Bangladesh – adjacent to the Bay of Bengal. Rising sea level, tidal surges, frequent cyclones, salinity intrusion are major challenges these women face. This is besides the patriarchal mindset of the community that also pose certain questions on women’s mobility, participation in decision-making, right to natural resources etc.
Despite all of this, the women’s groups have achieved considerable successes in learning about climate resilience, practising adaptation techniques and coordinating humanitarian response post-cyclone Mahasen. The overall outcome has also led to gradual shift in the gendered-identities with women gaining confidence and recognition of the communities, participating in disaster-preparedness strategy building within the community and with local government, and voicing climate demands globally.
