Our women from Mukteshwar villages in Nainital district IN THE Middle Himalayan ranges ( 1800m approx.) in India have taken a very important this agricultural season (May/ June- Oct/Nov) using their remarkable experience, knowledge and wisdom . They are bringing back (reviving) some of the traditional crops and varieties which had disappeared from their fields and food basket these past few decades. Field trials of 25 different varieties of paddy, millets, lentils and vegetables is being done in farmers’ own fields as well as on a piece of land taken on lease by the organization. While these crops and varieties are extremely rich in Calcium, Iron, Protein and different kinds of vitamins, they are also resistant to long dry spells, too much of rainfall , pest and disease attacks , thus ensuring food and nutrition security as well as increased climate resilience through improved agro biodiversity. This will help develop effective adaptation strategy to cope better with the impacts of changing weather pattern and improve the health of humans, animals and environment.- - Mukteshwar, Uttarakhand, India
