Solar Sister is working to bring the voices of women to the forefront of the energy sector as the world’s leading social enterprise in empowering African women with a clean energy driven economic opportunity. Women and girls must be a part of building a clean energy future for all because it is not only the right thing to do but the smart thing. If energy poverty was a person, chances are high that it would be the face of a woman working in a dark, smoky kitchen or a young girl who walks long distances to collect firewood. 70% of the 600 million people in Africa who lack access to electricity are women and girls living a life of darkness and danger. Solar Sister is solving this problem through integrating women as clean energy users, entrepreneurs, and leaders in the last mile distribution of solar and clean cooking products across sub-Saharan Africa. Indeed women are at the center of the solution. Their economic empowerment is key to eliminating energy poverty and addressing climate change. One lamp. One woman. One future at a time, Solar Sister is bringing light, hope and opportunity to thousands.
